Danger of the Evangelical ‘chrisitian’ Dominionist movement

I wrote this as a July post in a local online magazine in my area.
I am reposting here.

CHRISTIAN DOMINIONISM CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN, A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY?

First, some of the following politicians, or elected officials and some of the most outspoken, Christian, Reconstructionists, or dominianists, as described below, are:

Mike Pence. Ted Cruz. Governor Rick Perry. Jesse Duplantis. Louisiana minister Jesse Duplantis, who

Franklin Graham….

Pat Robertson….

Jim Bakker….

Robert Jeffress….

John Hagee…

DOMINIANISM

Most will not have heard of this ‘cult’ as I call it. But, its more than a cult, because its grown into a major fact since the election of Trump.

A little bit about this below.

From Texas Observer article, ‘Dominion Theology, The Radical Theology That Could Make Religious Freedom a Thing of the Past’

‘Dominion’ theology’.Has been around, hiding in our nation’s capital, and with a large amount of ‘evangelical’ Christians, or ‘sectarians’ from the extreme Christian Right. Yes, there is such a thing as ‘Christian Right.’

What is it? What is it called.

https://www.texasobserver.org/dominion-theology/

A Texas

“Dominionism comes in “soft” and “hard” varieties. “Hard” dominionism (sometimes called Christian Reconstructionism), as Clarkson describes it, explicitly seeks to replace secular government, and the US. Constitution, with a system based on Old Testament law.

There’s been a seclusive group in our Nation’s capital, living, proselytizing, and influencing policy for many decades now.”

Out own Vice President, adheres to this, as has been obvious to anyone, if they listen to him, above the Din of that narcissistic mess in the White House. Other suspect are Ted Cruz and others.

Ted Cruz’s father’s wrote a book in 2015, with the subtitle‘, ‘Empowering the Faithful to ‘reclaim’ America’. What he writes in his book is a basic rejection of the Constitution’s Article One, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; “

And goes on about freedom of speech. This in no way disallows anyone’s right to their religious faith, but the word, ‘ No law respecting an establishment of religion.’

This ‘state religion’ concept, present in Dominionism or Reconstructionism is prevalent also with Ted Cruz, and his Father, Rafael Cruz. “(Rafael)Cruz writes that there is no such thing as separation of church and state and it is not enshrined in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. The Ten Commandments, he writes, are the foundations for these documents. […]

The Dominionism believe in a form of Theocracy.. or religious, specifically, Christian.

Many are extreme Zionists, falsely claiming to support Israel, but believe this is the age of the return to Earth, to become King of Israel, converting, or damning Jews, if they don’t convert. This based on misinterpretation of Old and New Testament teachings.

They are political, trying to infiltrate and destroy the concept of a Constitutional Republic, or Democracy, for a Theocratic government based on Christianity as the rule of law, in a dangerous extremist form of Old Testament style of religious rule, not unlike some extremist beliefs, like certain extremist, cultic versions of Islamic ‘sharia law’.

Sociologist Sara Diamond, in an article from the Observer (Texas), “What began as a fringe evangelical sect in the 1970s has seen its influence mushroom — so much so that sociologist Sara Diamond has called Dominionism “the central unifying ideology for the Christian Right.” (Italics hers.)” – June 2016 https://www.texasobserver.org/dominion-theology/.

This is typical of most brands of this.

Another writer, Karl Grossman, in” A Theology of Power: Mike Pence and the Dominionists”, January 2019.

“…they emphasize that in it God gave humans “dominion” over the natural world and life in it. This, they believe, gives them license to exploit the earth. Further, the “Dominionists” have expanded this to justify theocratic rule of society.” And, “…. many of his [Pence] evangelical friends believed Pence’s ultimate purpose was to establish a government based on biblical law. That was what they called Christian Dominionism.”

The clear opposition to the Constitutional concept of ‘Separation of Church and State’’

They base this on questionable interpretations of the Hebrew scriptures, “the “Dominionists” are using a dubious translation of the Hebrew word yirdu. “ A term, in some interpretations, as ‘Dominion’. A French Rabbi Rashi. From over a millennium.

An ‘Americans United for Separation of Church and state’, poll, (May 2019),

“White evangelicals were much more theocratic. Seventeen percent want their faith to be the main source of US. law, and a whopping 54 percent want it to provide the source of some of our laws.”

Figures like Jerry Falwell and James Dobson started wielding political influence in a new way, followed today by a new generation that includes Franklin Graham and the Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress, all part of Trump’s leading evangelical defenders.

What is the intent of American form of this? There are various forms in America. Reconstructionism, Kingdom Theology.

Netflix recently did a series on a secretive group called ‘The Family’, a secretive group of mostly young white males, non traditional ‘Christians’, who don’t exactly espouse the words or teachings of Jesus.

A New Republic article from August 2019, reveals the history and current activities of this ‘cult’
“In the 1930s, a Norwegian named Abraham Vereide visited America, where he organized a “breakfast prayer meeting” between 19 unnamed business leaders who wanted to keep Western money in private pockets as the world’s markets heaved. When Vereide died in 1969, leadership of the secretive club passed to the legendary evangelical figurehead Douglas Coe (who died in 2017—the group now has no official leader, but many cells).

Vereide’s little meeting grew into the National Prayer Breakfast, the annual DC. event attended by hundreds of politicians—including, since 1953, each sitting president of the United States. Many congresspeople believe the event is thrown by Congress itself, Sharlet discovered, but in truth it has always been a Family affair. “The more invisible you can make your organization,” Coe once said, “the more influence it will have.” The Family is modeled on Coe’s own profile: he was deeply pious, extremely secretive, and influential beyond belief.

They wish to, depending upon which ‘branch’, we speak of, either replace American law with Old testament, biblical laws or changing current government but returning to what they think is

the Nation’s origins in Christianity,

What is their belief and strategy right in our Capitol with membership or association with All parties in the US, and some from abroad?

An evangelical figure, Douglas Coe, recently deceased, was the key person in this.

“In The Family’s eccentric theology, the world is run by “key men” who have been chosen by God to rule over the rest of us, in imitation of Jesus, who they believe to have been a muscular leader interested only in power. This equation of divine and political power runs counter to the American principle of the separation of church and state, and propounds an elitist, even totalitarian view of politics.”

He admired the Nazis and China’s Red Guard among others. A misrepresentation of the words of Jesus, perverted into a form of Authoritarianism, “Jesus said, ‘You have to put me before other people. And you have to put me before yourself”

As stated above, their purpose was to created a nation, not based on the Enlightenment principles of most of the Founders of our nation, but on biblical laws, mostly from the Old Testament of the Bible.

This may sum up the current thrust of the movement in today’s political example of Trump.

And if a man has been chosen by God, then who are the people to contradict him? It’s a some-are-more-equal-than-others theory that suits the evangelical agenda: In Trump, they found a “key man,” in Vereide’s phrase, who could channel the muscular vision of Christ’s will favored by those who value Christianity’s ubiquity more than any other policy. Jesus isn’t the point—power is.

CHRISTIANITY AND POWER IS THEIR FOUNDATION.

They have succeeded in the medium of their power over this nation in Trump. And have the Vice President as one of their devotees. All this at the pinnacle of power now. Is our Republic in danger? Our Constitution being usurped? Damn right.

They don’t care about Jesus’ actual teachings, but the concept of anointed all powerful, leader, read, Fuhrer

Recently, an Americans United for Separation of Church and state, in a poll, (May 2019),

“White evangelicals were much more theocratic. Seventeen percent want their faith to be the main source of US. law, and a whopping 54 percent want it to provide the source of some of our laws.”

Figures like Jerry Falwell and James Dobson started wielding political influence in a new way, followed today by a new generation that includes Franklin Graham, Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress, and so many others part of these powerful leaders, with massive influence…

Personal family involvement in this.

Its now obvious that some family members, long time evangelicals, whom I thought were more practical with their biblical beliefs, are basing their support and votes to Trump in this vein.

I am not sure they have any direct connection, but are definitely influenced by this.

A niece of mine and her husband, whom I talked to recently, mentioned voting in 2016, NOT for Trump but for Mike Pence. Also, including in their desires, a return to christian ‘standards’, anti abortion, reversing that decision of Row vs Wade. And I believe thrown in separation of races, and more.

Related to this is a false biblical interpretation, promoting the idea of the black race as lesser than others.

I discovered a long time ago, this prevalence of this in my family’s religious belief.

They were in the past, part of the Assembly of God church, an extreme evangelical, fundamentalist church, who was also for awhile a Minister from that church, openly at one point, I heard once, her father, (my brother in law), state that the Old testament story of ‘Ham’, and his descendants, were the progenitors of the black races, and condemned, by God.

After I graduated from High School, I joined groups of ‘Jesus freaks’, as they were sometimes called at the time, Some of my siblings, and family members, and in my family history, awash in this ‘country’ style conservative Christianity and seem to be caught in this group views and beliefs, even now.

This ‘minority’ is now in the top level of our government. Besides all the other criminal aspects of our current POT US and Vice President, and others in leadership positions, this could lead to a form of takeover similar to what is described in the book THE HANDMAID’S TALE by Margaret Atwood.

This threatens our Democracy, supported by large group, evangelical pastors, and leaders, but also, many billionaires, including the Koch brothers and others.

Evangelicals start having ‘the discussion’ about Trump, and today’s other news

It may seem insignificant right now, but this is how cults die. People who devote themselves to a cultural leader, whether it’s based on ideology or pragmatism, eventually lose faith in that individual because such high expectations cannot be met by any mortal being. This is why religion has great allure and longevity, for the figurehead is typically intangible and immortal. Conversely, cults rise and fall very quickly. In the beginning, it is the chosen messiah’s message which resonates. In the end, it is their real human flaws which reverberates. Once the group starts having ‘the discussion’ about their leader and doubts or even fears emerge, the downfall can occur quite rapidly.

A prime example is the internal dissent which befell Jim Jones and his Peoples Temple cult at a Jonestown, Guyana commune in 1978 where nearly a thousand members committed mass suicide or were victims…

Happy Winter Solstice!

An interesting, or some interesting thoughts about Winter solstice in general and in this years, 2021, events.

Humanistic Paganism

Happy Winter Solstice, or Yule!  Of course, our spherical planet also gives us the beautiful symmetry of the Summer Solstice (Litha) being celebrated now by our Southern Hemisphere friends.  With the exact Solstice moment after 11 pm EST today, it will already be Sunday in many parts of the world, so either day fits well for Solstice celebrations.  About 1 out of every two years or so, the longest night is not the night before the Winter Solstice but rather is the night after the Winter Solstice.  This is different for every time zone, and is easy to figure out.  If the instant of the Solstice is in the morning (before noon) in your local time zone, then the longest night is the night before.  If it’s in the afternoon or evening, the the longest night is the night after the Winter Solstice for  you.
