Protest, Protest Protest!! Micheal Steele, (on MSNBC.. are they paying this guy?)….doesn’t like the Protesters,, e.g. Occupy Wall street. We should be down on our knees thanking OWS for being there. We would still be stuck in a useless discussion of the ‘debt’ rather than real issues that involve the people, the ‘real’ people on Main st. (not the imaginary extreme Right, ‘tea party’, ‘you are with us or you are NOT an American BS), One Founding father (not too well known), ROBERT YATES, NY state, founder, “….Yates also predicted that a distant and powerful federal government would soon be overrun by the wealthiest individuals. Brutus did not despise the rich, he merely thought they would have more resources to organize and to get themselves elected. This would be a bad result, he believed, because once so many rich people are in power, they will start to work for their own interests and not for the public good.”… he would have been with OWS today.
A REPLY TO THE LETTER ENTITLED “OBAMA’S MANIACAL MINIONS”, The Record, Monday, February 13, 2012.
I was quite perturbed and upset by a ‘letter to the editor’ in the Record yesterday, titled, ‘Obama’s maniacal minions’. In it, besides, mistakenly calling the ‘Occupy Wall Street ‘ movement a ‘super super pac’ under the ‘guise’ of a separate entity, for Obama, and claiming that they (OWS) has not ‘called out’ Obama on his hypocrisy regarding his earlier condemnation of SUPERpacs and I assume, his earlier disdain for such. Mr Clum of Walden, later claims that Occupy does not ‘protest’ against Obama donors such as GE (blatantly false, see “http://www.drudge.com/archive/149641/ows-occupies-ge-ceos-lawn”), and calls OWS ‘disillusioned anarchists’ (among other epithets as ‘maladjusted’ , ‘proclaimed radicals’), ‘well financed’, again false. George Soros is on record having given a one- time donation to their cause, but having been down to Zuccotti park in NYC, before and after, they were evicted, I would never refer to these determined people of all stripes as ‘well financed’… I have been to several recent rallies and marches in support of OWS, (since October of 2011) along with Unions, old , young, leftists, anarchists, Republicans (Ron Paul supporters), Democrats, grandchildren, families, and grandmothers & other supporters. OWS has from the beginning, stated its Purpose, if not its ‘demands’ (it’s not a political party, as the Alternative ‘Tea’ party claims to be). I ask, has the gentleman ever looked at their website, which has continually stated (on its Right sidebar), “Occupy Wall Street is leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.”
OWS may or may not have begun the use of the terms ’99 %’ or ‘1 %’… I believe they borrowed them. I was at the showing of the documentary “Inside Job” ** this past Sunday, wherein, the analysis between the 1 % ,and the 99% percent, as terms were used. OWS, also further states that they use ‘ the Arab Spring tactic to … encourage the use of nonviolence to maximize the safety of all participants.’
You may disagree with their tactics, as I do with ‘some’ of the Tea parties’ also, but both of these groups have drastically changed our conversation in this nation, and I believe, if we can still talk, there is hope.
Personally, I supported Obama in ’08, but, as with so many Progressives these days, am almost just as disillusioned with him, as some Republicans. Mr Clum has every right to state his opinion as does the paper to print it, but instead of grandstanding with claims and terms as ‘maniacal minions’, and false claims, please try to educate yourself a little on the topic, before speaking. The rhetoric in this Election year is going to get to the point, where it’s just shouting and nothing more. I am a retired librarian, and, not perfect, in any sense. I am thankful that people ‘call’ me on some of my current and past views, but, it’s my nature to seek information and hopefully, truth. The Red/Blue state divide is false. I believe we need to change ‘radically’ (meaning at the ‘root’) our election process, stop calling each other ‘elitist’, ‘ignorant’, ‘Nazi’ this, ‘Fascist’ that, if we are going to be able to come together and solve some problems. It’s going to get deafening out there soon, and I hope we can all come to the table of humanity with a little respect, informed views, and try to work together. I am turning 60 next month, and protested the War in the 60’s and other things since, but cannot remember the country being as purposely divided, hopeless, and in such extremes of inequity. I don’t claim to know what the Founding Fathers meant (there are plenty of documents out there for us to see for ourselves), but, let’s turn off the TV and cable news at least one evening a week, search out the truth, or what we can find of it, and at least try to put ourselves, if not our country back on the road to communication. Yes, I am an Anarchist at heart, and I believe complete participatory democracy is possible. I am also a pragmatist, but I DO believe we CAN change reality.
I am reposting a link that Padma sent to Council members…
Kathie Aberman just suggested this link. I have been following this all week. We hope Obama will Veto this if it passes, but just the idea that they are trying to do this behind our backs as they did with the ‘Patriot’ act, is atrocious
